Sinning is the same as failing to give the glory of God its rightful place of prime importance (Romans 3:23).
Sin, by definition, violates God's commands (1 Samuel 12:9, 1 John 3:4).
Sin always violates the greatest command, to love God with all our heart, mind, and strength, and often violates the command to love our neighbor as we love ourselves. Sin is radically selfish - seeking one's own pleasure in spite of the fact that one is not regarding the good of others or God's commands.
The wages of sin is death (Romans 6:23).
The just reward of sin is God's wrath (Romans 1:18, Colossians 3:16).
Sinning denies God's authority, wisdom, goodness, and truthfulness; it is deceitful because God is good, wise, truthful, and has all authority. Sinning is putting another god before God and therefore is a denial that God is God. Sin sets up man as the authority, as autonomous (a law to himself) (1 Samuel 15:23).
Sin is practical atheism.
Sin does not tend toward my highest happiness. To commit sin, I must despise a greater pleasure to gain a fleeting, lesser one.
Continual sinning shows that I prize the pleasure (however inferior) that sin offers more than the promises and pleasures (Psalm 16:11) of God (which I should believe and delight in).
I can have no assurance of salvation if I habitually indulge in sin (1 John 1:6).
Sin attacks my soul and my relationship with God, as well as my capacity for happiness and satisfaction in Him.
Sin is a despising of God (1 Samuel 12:10).
Sin is, therefore, my worst enemy.
Sin hinders the attainment of godliness and the accomplishment of legitimate goals (Hebrews 12:1,2).
Sin abuses God's grace and other people as mere objects to satisfy the lusts of the flesh.
Sin is a poor example to others and may lead others to do the same thing.
When I sin, I may cause people to blaspheme God's name (1 Samuel 12:14).
Sin preaches a false and impotent Gospel - it denies the Christ who saved His people from their sin.
If we do not deny ourselves, we lose our soul (Luke 9:23-27).
If we do not fight sin and cut off that which causes offense, we shall be cast into hell (Matthew 5:29-30).
We are to crucify the flesh and its lusts. We are to be dead to the world and the world dead to us. "They that are Christ's have crucified the flesh with the affections and lusts." - Galatians 5:24.
Sin is failing to trust God, to believe God, to take God at His Word. "Without faith it is impossible to please Him: for he that cometh to God must believe that He is, and that He is a rewarder of those who diligently seek Him." - Hebrews 11:6. "Whatsoever is not of faith is sin." - Romans 14:23.
It displeases God (1 Samuel 11:27).
Sin is a lie, and those who love and make a lie are outside God's holy city (Revelation 22:15).
We are commanded to flee sin and follow after the things God loves (1 Timothy 6:11, 2 Timothy 2:22).
Sin is a mocking of God. "Be not deceived; God is not mocked: for whatsoever a man soweth, that shall he also reap. For he that soweth to the flesh shall of the flesh reap corruption; but he that soweth to the Spirit shall of the Spirit reap life everlasting." - Galatians 6:7,8.
We cannot serve God and mammon; we cannot serve two masters but must love the one and hate the other (Matthew 6:24).
We are to seek first God's kingdom and His righteousness (Matthew 6:33).
We are bought with a precious price if we are truly redeemed; we are not our own but belong, body and soul, to the Lord Jesus Christ (1 Corinthians 6:20, 7:23; 1 Thessalonians 4:3-7).
